My garden is in a right mess. It’s not very big, about the size and shape of an average postage stamp. But there’s a monster plant at the far end that’s grown over the wall and on the other side of the wall there’s a 25-foot drop! It’s a tree, growing downwards. I’m not sure who’s living on the other side of the wall but they haven’t complained for several years.
Then my neighbour’s fence blew over; it’s Storm Erin what done it. The neighbours have replaced it and made a good job of it. But I fear the fencing men have destroyed the one beautiful plant in the garden, a clematis montana that covers everything with pink flowers for about a week in May. We shall see.
And then there’s the bindweed. This has been at war with me for several years and now it has slowly, slowly established itself in every corner. Short of Napalm, it will never budge. (Apart from being illegal, Napalm would kill the cats, which at present are the only visible animals living there.)
I would like to plant roses and gooseberries. Roses are beautiful smell good and were loved by my parents and grandparents. Gooseberries come in many delicious varieties. (I’d take advice not to grow the types that shelter newborn human children. Although I suppose the cats might look after them or more likely torment them.)
I am, not to put too fine a point on it, knocking on a bit. There’s a lot to be said for growing old but one minor downside is that something strange happens to your knees. You might think I’d have difficulty getting down there with the old trowel and fork. With some folded newspaper for knee protection, that’s not too difficult. The problem is getting up again. I might find it easier to stay down, put on a pointy hat and pretend to be a garden gnome.
Or I suppose I could find a gardener.
This is Day 9 of Writing Challenge 2024. People all over the world take part in the WC. We write something every weekday for 4 weeks based on a prompt This year, I'll be sharing 21 articles based loosely on prompts about parts of the body. Do we fully appreciate the role things and stuff play in our lives? Each part of the body has certain things and stuff associated with it. (Probably!) I've no idea where this will go but hope you enjoy the journey. The introductory post was Things and Stuff. The last post was Hear the Word from the Lords ... and the next is Gaudeamus igitur.
