I don’t hate sport. That would take up far too much energy. Sport isn’t worth the effort of hating. I am indifferent. Yes, I can occasionally appreciate a great gymnastic display. In theory, I appreciate someone who is the world’s greatest something or other. But OK s/he can run fast but the world’s fastest runner doesn’t look any different from any other runner.
Then there’s cricket. Even though I was born in Yorkshire, cricket's spiritual home, I don’t get it. To spend 5 days in Headingly watching people throw a ball around is not my idea of fun. Or even worse, listening to it on the radio! Some people save up mountains of ironing to stay in and listen to in-depth discussions about fruit cakes delivered to the commentators or the progress of a wind-blown paper bag. On the odd occasion, something actually happens that’s relevant to the game, we hear he’s hit a six. Great.
There are libraries full of books about cricket. Wisden, an annual book of cricketing lore. It has to be a huge elaborate joke. I just don’t get it.
We had to play it at school, at least in nets. One teacher, Grozzle I think it was, told me watching me play was like watching someone swatting flies. Swatting flies has to be more useful than cricket.
I am fairly confident that I have never bowled a maiden over – in any interpretation I can think of for those words. I’ve never met a silly mid-off, or been out for a duck (not knowingly).
The only time I’ve worn shin pads was in the nets. Just in case any of my fellow contemptibles had sufficient oomph to hurl a ball fast enough to do damage. I’ve never thought of my shins as being particularly vulnerable. I must have walked thousands of miles and nothing has ever hit them, not that I remember.
So, here’s my advice. If you don’t want to hurt your shins, avoid playing cricket!
I don’t possess anything to do with cricket. And nothing associated with shins, other than my trousers, which I suspect most of my readers would appreciate not seeing. So, today it’s this delightful stock image of a … grasshopper?!
This is Day 8 of Writing Challenge 2024. People all over the world take part in the WC. We write something every weekday for 4 weeks based on a prompt This year, I'll be sharing 21 articles based loosely on prompts about parts of the body. Do we fully appreciate the role things and stuff play in our lives? Each part of the body has certain things and stuff associated with it. (Probably!) I've no idea where this will go but hope you enjoy the journey. The introductory post was Things and Stuff. The last post was Maps and the next is Battle Zone.
